Islamic Scholar to visit T&T in February


Professor Habib Ahmed

The Sharjah Chair in Islamic Law and Finance in the School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University, UK, Professor Habib Ahmed, is scheduled to visit T&T from February 23rd to 27th next. 

Prof. Ahmed’s itinerary will include interviews on Islamic Broadcasting Network (IBN), The Islamic Network (TIN) and meetings with the Board of Management of Takaaful T&T Friendly Society (TTTFS) and the Board of Directors of Muslim Credit Union (MCU). He will also be the feature speaker at a Lecture, Lunch and Q&A session on Sunday 26th February at the Cascadia Hotel and Conference Centre.

A former Economist with the Islamic Banking Development Group, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Prof. Ahmed is a member of the Capital Adequacy Working Group of Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB) which is responsible, inter alia, for setting standards and guidelines for Islamic banks and financial institutions. Recently, he was elected as Vice President of the International Association of Islamic Economists.

Prof. Ahmed’s research interests include Islamic Economics and Finance, Contemporary Applications of Islamic Commercial Law, Economics of Law and Non-Profit Organisations and Waqf (Islamic endowments). Takaaful T&T has adopted the Islamic institution of Waqf as a platform for its charitable, welfare and development programmes.

Professor Ahmed has attended and contributed research papers in several conferences/seminars on Islamic Economics and Finance including in Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Italy, Jordan, Pakistan, Qatar, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, UAE, UK and USA.

The visit is being organised by Takaaful T&T Friendly Society (TTTFS).
